Must Do's Prior to Debate

Use this as a check list of what you need to finish each week.

Due March 9
  1. Fill out Inspiration Map for Personality of Character and Important Actions Connected to War
  2. Research economy and how people lived in your region (North or South)
  3. Write email to opponent about life in your region

Due March 16
  1. Research slavery and the historical events/issues that demonstrate how the North and South kept trying to compromise over slavery (e.g. Constitutional Conventions 1808 Compromise, Missouri Compromise, Bleeding Kansas, Abraham Lincoln being elected, etc.)Fill out Inspiration Map for "Stance on Issues"
  2. Fill out Inspiration Map for Opponents "Important Actions of War."
  3. Write email to opponent about slavery and the issues surrounding it (examples above).

Due March 23
  1. Research why the South seceded from the North
  2. Fill out Inspiration Map for "Stance on being a separate country"
  3. Fill out Inspiration Map for Opponents "Stance on Issues"
  4. Write email to opponent about South Carolina and the South seceding from the North. Be sure to focus on the facts that led up to the North and South becoming two separate countries and if your character would want this to happen (Issues that led up to southern states seceding. Does South Carolina have the right to secede? Does the Federal Government have right to force them to stay?).
  5. Use S.S. time to meet with the student in other class who is also you character to share notes and strategies

To complete the Last Week of March (March 30)
  1. Use S.S. time to meet with your team (North or South) in your time
  2. Write email inviting your opponent to debate
  3. Fill out graphic organizer that will help write speech
  4. Write rough draft of speech
  5. Use S.S. time to share your speech with the student in other class who is also you character
  6. Practice speech 6 times out loud
  7. Do a sample reading of your speech to your team in S.S.
  8. Practice 6 more times out loud
